Babur Hunting Rhinoceros in Swati
Artist:Sarwan
| Support Type: | Paper |
| Paint Type: | Mineral Pigment |
| Current Location: | Created in the Mughal imperial workshop during Akbar’s reign |
| Location History: | Formerly in major international private collections |
The composition abandons the stillness of court portraiture for a diagonal thrust, horses, hunters and rhinoceroses scattered across a rocky terrain that turns the hunt into a demonstration of imperial agency over nature and geography. That the rhinoceros, not a native Mughal court animal but a creature of the frontier, is the quarry is significant: Babur's dominion is shown extending to the edges of the known world, and the painting's visual energy is the argument.
