Farrukh Beg transforms the palace into a carefully ordered theatre of imperial sociability, where Babur’s authority is expressed not through military action but through his control of space, ceremony, and company. The patterned architectural surfaces and hierarchically arranged figures create a tension between the decorative flatness of the Persianate style and the more individualized faces of some courtiers, reflecting the Mughal atelier’s synthesis of artistic traditions. Babur’s central placement makes entertainment itself a form of sovereignty: leisure becomes a means of displaying hierarchy, refinement, and command. The scene consequently presents imperial power as both political authority and cultivated social performance.
