This marvelous triptych is a tempera painting on wood by Andrea Mantegna, a northern Italian painter active during the fifteenth century Renaissance. He was married into the prominent Bellini family, also known for their artistic pursuits and prowess. Mantegna was active across various northern Italian cities including - Padua, Verona, Venice, and Mantua. This triptych was commissioned by Ludovico Gonzaga for the Saint George Castle chapel in Mantua. This piece displays three important events of Christ's journey in this realm - Ascension of Christ, Adoration of the Magi, Presentation of Christ at the Temple. The centre panel depicts the scene of the Adoration of the Magi, where the three kings from the East have come to pay homage to baby Jesus along with many other saints. Baby Jesus is sat in the virgin Mary's lap and is surrounded by angels and overlooked by old Joseph. In the right panel we are presented with the sight of infant Jesus's presentation in the temple. According to Jewish custom, Mary had gone to purify herself after giving birth where Jesus was also to be circumcised. Here, baby Jesus is seen cowering away from the priest who is set to perform this rite. Finally, the left panel depicts the resurrected Christ rising to heaven supported by angels as the virgin Mary and the gospels are moved by his divinity. A remarkable feature of these three panels, is the treatment of perspective. From the realistic hills in the left panel, the rolling plains and the mountainous climb in the centre panel, to the grandiose depiction of the temple, and the treatment of the ground in all the scenes create a sense of spatial three-dimensionality. Mantegna has presented all the figures with an extraordinary naturalism, as was the norm of High Renaissance. The overall harmony, treatment of anatomical figures, and the depiction of holy figures as idealised human figures are the key features of this triptych. The artist has used various techniques like chiaroscuro, unione, and cangiante to highlight depth, harmony, and shadows in this panel respectively. Mantegna with this piece, has successfully demonstrated his skillful artistic prowess and powerful story-telling.
