Arjuna Beheading Karna with an Anjalika Weapon

Support Type: Paper
Paint Type: Gouache
Current Location: Princeton University Art Museum in Princeton, New Jersey.
Location History:The painting was donated to the museum as a gift by J. Lionberger Davis (a member of the Princeton Class of 1900) in 1969.

The painting depicts Arjuna’s climactic killing of Karna during the Kurukshetra war, using the divine Anjalika weapon. The dramatic confrontation embodies the Mahabharata’s themes of fate, duty and tragic heroism. Karna’s vulnerable position contrasts with Arjuna’s decisive action, while dynamic gestures and intense composition heighten the scene’s emotional and moral complexity.
