The painting was donated to the museum as a gift by J. Lionberger Davis (a member of the Princeton Class of 1900) in 1969.
This painting captures a truly intense, chaotic moment from the great war epic, right when Arjuna cuts down Karna with that fatal arrow. Looking at it, your eyes immediately get pulled into the wild energy of the battlefield, which Ahmad Kashmiri has packed into every single corner of the page. Right near the center, there is Krishna, painted in that distinct blue skin, steering the chariot horses with his arms thrown wide open as if shouting a command. Right next to him is Arjuna, poised with his bow completely drawn back, ready or having just released that final, devastating shot.
The whole scene feels loud and frantic, almost dizzying. On the left side, there is a giant wooden chariot tilted at an awkward, broken angle, where a figure seems to be falling headfirst—and wait, if you look closer, there is actually a severed head right below the wheel, showing just how brutal this clash really is. Soldiers and horses are scattered all over the rocky ground, some looking terrified, others charging forward with swords raised. Up in the top left corner, a group of people is huddled together inside this strange, glowing pink loop or energy field, watching the whole disaster unfold from a hillside, almost like they are trapped in a protective bubble or maybe a vision.
The landscape itself feels distinctly rough and rocky. Ahmad used these pale, jagged, almost bony-looking rocks and hills stacked on top of one another, which feels way more like the rugged terrain of the far north than a typical smooth royal garden. The colors are mostly earthy warm oranges, pale greens, and dusty browns but then you get these sudden pops of bright yellow and red outfits that keep your eyes jumping from one frantic soldier to the next. At the very top and bottom edges of the frame, there are these elegant lines of Persian script framing the chaos, contrasting the wild, messy violence of the war with the neat, quiet order of the courtly book page.
This dramatic painting captures an emotionally charged portrayal of one of the most famous moments in the Indian epic Mahabharata. It captures a moral dilemma and reflects that right and wrong are not always clear-cut in times of war. It combines tension and timing with contrast, emotion and questions ethics vs action.
