Born on 4th november, 1811, Mikhail Lebedev, was born to a family of Serfs. Fortunately, around the 1820s serfdom was abolished in his region, freeing his family and in turn, giving Mikhail an opportunity to pursue his interest. His expertise in art, attracted the attention of a Baltic-German diplomat and administrator, the Count pahlen who provided him with a full scholarship to go and study in Saint Petersburg. Thus, he received his formal artistic training at the prestigious Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg. In this academy, Maxim Vorobiev, one of Russia's leading landscape artists, trained Mikhail Lebedev who developed into an excellent landscape painter and was awarded several academic awards including the Gold Medal in 1833.
