Ardavan’s slave-girl Gulnar with the young Ardashir

Ardavan’s slave-girl Gulnar with the young Ardashir

Support Type: Paper
Paint Type: Watercolor
Current Location: Nasser D. Khalili Collection of Islamic Art

What draws me into this miniature isn't the romance on the surface ; it's the quiet defiance folded into every detail. Gulnar and Ardashir lie together beneath the covers, but what lingers in my eye is the rope, still tied to the parapet where she lowered herself down to reach him. That single object carries the whole risk of the story: a slave-girl choosing love over the safety of her position, climbing down from a guarded roof into an uncertain future. The neatly placed slippers beneath them feel almost tender to me, a small domestic detail inserted into a moment of real danger ; as if the painter wanted to remind us that even amid political intrigue and royal suspicion, two people simply wanted a night of closeness. I find myself reading the architecture, gold-flecked and precise, not as decoration but as a cage ; beautiful, but confining. Gulnar's descent, to me, becomes a quiet act of self-authorship: choosing intimacy over obedience, even knowing what it might cost her.
