| Location History: | Panini created three versions of Ancient Rome, which are now held by the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and the Louvre in Paris. Both the Met and the Louvre also own a copy of its companion piece, Modern Rome, while the third version of that pendant painting belongs to the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. |
Ancient Rome by Panini is a masterpiece of the 18th century. A capriccio painting, it features some of Rome's most famous architectural wonders such as the Pantheon, Colosseum, Arch of Constantinople, etc. and also depict some of Panini's own works. These miniature monuments and sculptures have been replicated precisely and serve as a visual map of the entire city and its remarkable spots. Panini has made clever utilization of space. Each element depicted in the painting is highly detailed, vibrant and realistic. The painting is considered to have been commissioned by Count de Stainville, the French ambassador to Rome, depicted in the center. Panini has also included himself in the painting. The painting may have served as an 'itinerary' for the Count, outling the striking and defining spots of the city.
