The Gods in Search for the Sacred Fire

Artist:Narayan
Support Type: Paper
Paint Type: Watercolor
Current Location: Christie\'s, New York
Location History:The painting belonged to the collection of Gerald Reitlinger (1900–1978) in London and was sold at Sotheby's, London, on 24 October 1921. It subsequently entered another private collection and was sold at Sotheby's, New York, on 20 September 1985. The present owner acquired it from that sale. The folio is from the second illustrated Razmnama, dated approximately 1598–1599.

This artwork from the second imperial Razmnama (1598–1599) provides information about a pivotal moment of divine narrative where Hindu mythology is reinterpreted through the cultural lens of Emperor Akbar’s court atelier. Painted by Narayan , the artwork presents spiritual reverence and courtly elegance. The lush, rocky landscape to emphasize the divine figures in a physical realm by bridging classical Persian miniature aesthetics with Indian botanical realism and European spatial depth is really mastermind. Beyond its narrative illustration, the piece symbolizes Akbar’s reign and his tolerance towards other religions. Bringing Sanskrit literary traditions into creative synthesis with Persianate art styles to celebrate cross-cultural dialogue and imperial patronage truly lives up to the par.
