Albert Bierstadt was born near Düsseldorf in 1830 and brought to Massachusetts as an infant, and his tremendous popularity later rested on his panoramic scenes of the American West, making him one of the last major figures tied to the Hudson River school. After completing his formal training in Germany, he returned to the United States, where he gained notoriety for travelling great, frequently perilous distances in pursuit of the most breathtaking landscapes. He created his idealised depictions of the West using sketches and photos he took along the way. This particular canvas, which was created in Rome based on research conducted during his American expeditions rather than being painted on location, is an idealised view of the Sierra Nevada, with cliffs and waterfalls framing a still lake with deer at its edge and light handled in the glowing, almost theatrical way that academics now associate with Luminism. Bierstadt didn't just paint spectacle, he sold it that way too. He was a hardworking entrepreneur who grew rich pairing his skill as a painter with a talent for self-promotion, unveiling his canvases as staged events complete with ticket sales and planted news stories, tactics one contemporary critic called a "vast machinery of advertisement and puffery." This particular painting toured through Europe as far as St. Petersburg before Bierstadt, buoyed by glowing reviews, brought it home so American audiences could take pride in it. The reception wasn't static across his career, though. Early acclaim gave way, in later decades to skepticism. Critics increasingly viewed his grand theatrical staging and idealized wilderness as excessive rather than sublime. By his death in 1902 taste had shifted well away from epic landscape painting altogether, a reversal now central to how art historians frame his legacy.
