Mangala Thampuratty is repeatedly celebrated as one of India's earliest women artists. In an article by 'Feminism In India', she is narrativised as the matriarch who painted at a time when artistic practice was dismissed as a genteel accomplishment for women. Yet this celebration conceals a more unsettling contradiction. While her biography circulates freely within art history, the material evidence of her artistic labour remains largely inaccessible, enclosed within hereditary private collections. She survives as Raja Ravi Varma's gifted sister but rarely as an 'artist' whose work is publicly encountered. Her identity is visible, but her practice is not. This contradiction demands that we move beyond recovery narratives. The question is no longer why Mangala painted, but why her paintings remain inaccessible. Their absence is an effect of a regime of ownership that continues to distinguish between public history and private inheritance. The archive authorises certain objects to become history. Mangala's invisibility is actively produced through the material organisation of cultural property. Here, the paradox becomes profound. Aristocratic privilege enabled Mangala to transgress the gendered boundaries of artistic production. But that very privilege simultaneously confined her work within the domestic circuits of elite inheritance. Patriarchy reconfigured her paintings into inherited symbols of family prestige, a phenomenon I define as "reproductive heritage" (Federici, 2004). The value of her art gets reduced through this chain of restricted possession. At a time when ownership determines remembrance, Mangala survives not because of her work but because of her genealogy.
