In what seems like a classic mythology painting at the outset, a woman dressed in the attire of classical, Renaissance art, with the outer robe of her dress swaying in the wind. Her red dress underneath feels swaying in the wind, too. A very delicate strings of white seem to entangle her. A head of shrubs crowns her head. She seems like a goddess. But one who has a beautiful swan on a golden leash. While two beautiful winged toddlers, entangled in her flowing blue robes, with blood-stained wings, also grab the swan in their hands. Behind them are a few musical instruments. One worth noting is a stringed instrument with the base of a deer, with its antlers holding the whole piece together.
The female represented here is goddess Erato, the goddess of music in Greek mythology. She depicts the painstaking endeavour it takes to create music, one which even sheds blood. The swan, Apollo’s bird, is a symbol of music being harnessed. While the two winged toddlers are putti, which represent Zephyrus, the west wind. According to legends swans sing when the west-wind blows. The stag-lyre in the picture represents the ability to hear keenly, thus harnessing the power of deep listening in creating music.
Thus, the whole scene is an allegory of creating music. The Renaissance focus on depicting godly figures is used by Filipino Lippi to allegorise the artistic endeavour it takes to create music. The painting has a sense of harmony, with the sea at the side and the tree at the back creating a balance of nature and its living beings.
In a parallel interpretation, Timothy J. McGee argues that the painting rather is an allegory of the silencing of music. According to McGee, the musical instruments are not being played; they are upside down. The blood on the wings of Putti is a symbol of violence. Hence, the whole description is about a cultural protest regarding the creation of secular music in Florence at that time. Therefore, is a symbol of artistic expression that was on a leash at the time.
Music is not only simple entertainment but also a symbol of intellect and spiritual beauty. Lippi portrays Erato, the muse of lyric poetry and music, as a symbol of transcendental inspiration. During the Renaissance, artists revisited Greco-Roman mythology to express humanist ideals, therefore, the muse becomes more than a mythological figure- she represents the idea of artistic enlightenment.
