Artist:Govardhan
Support Type: Paper

Current Location: The Metropolitan Museum of Art (The Met)

Akbar With Lion and Calf is a Mughal artwork, attributed to the artist Govardhan. It is painted with watercolour and ink on paper, combined with touches of gold. In the painting, Akbar, a Mughal emperor, takes up the centre stage. He is depicted with a halo and adorned in jewellery, and he can be seen donning a wise and calm expression. Under his towering figure, a lion and a calf – two opposing animals with one being a predator and the other prey – live in peace. With angels flying above the emperor in celebration, this painting is a glorification of Akbar by his grandson Shah Jahan, who commissioned the artwork. https://www.clevelandart.org/print/art/1971.78 https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/451268?utm_source=chatgpt.com
