'Akbar on a Pilgrimage from Agra to Ajmer' or just 'Akbar', as is the generic title attributed to the painting by Nand Gwaliori, is a piece belonging to the 'Mughal' school of paintings. The artwork is an illustration from the 'Akbarnama' ('The Book of Akbar'), written by Abul Fazl and was coloured by Nand Gwaliori, with outlines from Basawan. 'Akbar on a Pilgrimage from Agra to Ajmer' chronicles one specific incident in Emperor Akbar's life: his journey from Agra to Ajmer, on foot. As the story goes, Akbar had vowed that if blessed with a son, he would set out on a pilgrimage to Ajmer, and pay his respects at Shaikh Mu'in ad-Din Chishti's shrine. He sired Prince Salim (later Emperor Jahangir), in 1569, and in January 1570, set out from Agra to fulfill his oath. The painting depicts the Emperor, the main subject of the painting, at the center of the composition, in royal white garb. He is surrounded by his servants, carrying emblems of the court, with the most obvious one being the sunshade and fan. The background of the painting is punctuated with crowds of people (the host of servants), trees and bushes and animals such as deer, foxes and elephants etc. The Persian text in the painting, translates to 'Composition by Basawan and Work by Nand Gwaliori'.
