Sarwan, also known as Sarvan, was one of the most prominent painters in the imperial painting workshop (called tasvirkhana ) of Emperor Akbar. He was mainly active during the later half of the 16th century. He, like many of his counterparts engaged in collaborative projects where there was a designer ( called Tarrah ) who usually sketched the layout and composition and the painter/colourist who filled up the layout with colours ( called the rang-amezi ). His art work is mainly found in the illustrations of Akbarnama, which is one of the main productions of Akbar's workshop. The given painting depicts Akbar greeting the Rajput rulers and other nobles at court. Being an illustration from the Akbarnama, it is a collaborative work of three master painters including Sarwan, Madhav and Miskin. The painting visually interprets the imperial diplomacy, cultural synthesis, and political integration policies of the Mughals. In the illustration, we can see Akbar sitting in an elevated position inside an ornate canopy, addressing the court while the dignitaries and nobles are seated accordingly on a rich carpeted platfom in front of the emperor. The presence of royal animals like elephants and leopards in the foreground further enhance the grandeur of the painting. The illustration has a smooth blending of Persian miniature precision and Indian vribant composition as well as showcases the distinct textile distinct textile patterns, turbans, and weapons highlighting the interaction between Mughal and Rajput elites.
