Akbar appoints Muzaffar Khan as governor of Bengal

Artist:Inayat
Support Type: Paper
Paint Type: Ink
Current Location: Chester Bratty Library

This folio depicts the appointment of Muzaffar Khan as Governor of Bengal by Akbar. The painting was executed by Inayat, and the folio is from the Akbarnama, compiled by Abu'l-Fazl. The scene, rendered in a style synonymous with Mughal miniature art perfected under the reign of Akbar, seems to be set in an outdoor space, with Akbar enthroned beneath a canopy and flanked by his attendants. The surrounding space is occupied by his courtiers, who, very interestingly, have animals and birds around them: a peacock and a peahen on the roof of the building, and a deer, a horse, and a falcon on the ground, being tended to by figures in the court. Despite the presence of these animals, the scene remains a solemn one, with Akbar bestowing a post upon Muzaffar Khan in the exercise of his royal authority. Muzaffar Khan accepts his appointment with respect and reverence, while the other courtiers look on with varying degrees of respect. In my opinion, the attention to detail throughout this folio is what makes this painting really stand out.
