Alesso Baldovinetti’s Adorazione dei pastori is a large Early Renaissance fresco created for the Chiostro dei Voti (Cloister of the Vows) of the Basilica della Santissima Annunziata in Florence. The work represents the Nativity scene, focusing on the Virgin Mary, the Christ Child, Saint Joseph, shepherds, and angels who gather to witness the birth of Christ. The fresco is part of Baldovinetti’s important Florentine commissions and is recognized as one of his major surviving works. It was painted between 1460 and 1462 using the fresco technique on plaster. The composition reflects Baldovinetti’s interest in careful linear definition, luminous colour, and detailed natural landscapes, qualities associated with Florentine painting of the mid-fifteenth century. The figures are arranged within a spacious landscape setting, where rocky formations, vegetation, architectural ruins, and atmospheric effects create a sense of depth. Baldovinetti’s attention to the natural world is especially significant, as scholars have noted his emphasis on precise observation of landscape and the relationship between figures and their environment. The central group presents the Virgin Mary kneeling in adoration before the infant Christ, while the shepherds approach with gestures of devotion and wonder. Angels appear as divine messengers, connecting the earthly scene with the heavenly event. The inclusion of humble shepherds alongside the sacred figures follows traditional Nativity imagery but is treated with Renaissance interest in human emotion, spatial organization, and realistic detail. A distinctive feature of the fresco is Baldovinetti’s landscape treatment. The background contains carefully observed Tuscan-style scenery, including mountains, plants, and rocky terrain, which contributes to the spiritual atmosphere of the scene while demonstrating the artist’s fascination with nature. Art historians have highlighted Baldovinetti’s role in developing Florentine approaches to landscape and his experimentation with colour and painting techniques. The fresco also demonstrates Baldovinetti’s technical experimentation. Although the work was executed primarily as a fresco, historical sources note that the artist experimented with innovative methods that later affected the preservation of some of his wall paintings. Despite conservation challenges, the Adorazione dei pastori remains an important example of fifteenth-century Florentine fresco painting and provides insight into the transition between medieval devotional traditions and Renaissance naturalism.
