Adoration of the Shepherds

Support Type: Wood Panel
Paint Type: Oil Paint
Current Location: Uffizi Gallery

A brilliant work of the High Renaissance called Adoration of the Shepherds (c. 1510) is a fine example of its author’s extraordinary drawing skills and meticulous execution. This oil on board painting is part of the collection of Florence’s famed Uffizi Gallery, and it perfectly captures the image of the Savior’s birth in the old stable that signifies the beginning of the Christian era and the end of the pagan one. The composition is well-balanced and attractive, as it depicts the infant Christ resting his head on the white cloth over some straw. His image is surrounded by Virgin Mary and St. Joseph, who are both dressed modestly but express grave feelings of love and devotion to God and His Son. In their turn, the angels in red garments participate in the narrative by coming to the Nazareth’s home on a mission to announce the good news about Jesus’s birth. On the right side of the painting, several shepherds come to pay homage to the Son of God and bring Him gifts, and one of them brings a lamb as a symbol of Jesus’s future sacrifice on the cross. The artistic skill of Lorenzo di Credi in creating this work is complemented by his profound knowledge and experience gained from working with his future master Leonardo da Vinci and their teacher Andrea del Verrocchio. Indeed, the image of the infant Christ is superb in its precision, smoothness of lines, and delicate folds of his clothing. Moreover, there is a lovely landscape at a distance behind the ruined buildings to the right, as the painter used his sfumato technique to create soft outlines and blurred images of hills and trees in the faraway. Altogether, these elements, combined with the overall balance of the painting, give it a sense of calmness and depth, thus emphasizing the author’s skill in portraying religious subjects in a manner that adheres to the Renaissance canons of harmony and spirituality.
