Agnolo Bronzino was a Florentine mannerist painter. This makes him a known figure of the late High Renaissance period. Mannerism focused on exaggerating body proportions and angles. This resulted in instability. Often Bronzino mixed High Renaissance and Baroque to give form to his unique style. His portraits are often described as icy and stoic. He practiced under the Renaissance painter Raffaelino del Garbo in his earlier years. Although he mainly painted portraits, he is also known to have painted many religious and allegorical paintings. He had also worked under the Florentine painter Pontormo. He had remained under the patronage of the Duke of Tuscany for the most part of this career. His portrait works were read as elegant and stylish. Unemotional haughtiness was expressed in most of his paintings.
"A young woman and her little boy" is an example of the artist's mannerist paintings. The painting is filled by the central subject of a woman- possibly a noble woman in the court of the Duke of Florence. She has a non expressive and rigid posture with a cold stare. She is wearing an expensive and ornate red attire with gold embellishments around her collar and her waist. She has a polished chilled demeanor about her. By her left is a small blond boy. According to X-radiography reports, the little boy was added later on. The child is ivory skinned and is holding onto his mother's fingers.
