A Satyr mourning over a Nymph

Support Type: Wood Panel
Paint Type: Oil Paint
Current Location: The National Gallery, London, England
Location History:From the Collection at Florence of Conte Ferdinando Guicciardini (1782–1833). Probably passed to his son, Conte Carlo. With Lombardi and Baldi at Florence, probably by 1856 and certainly by 1858. Purchased from Francesco Lombardi, Florence, 1862.

Piero di Cosimo’s A Satyr Mourning over a Nymph explores grief, loss, and the emotional bond between humans, animals, and nature. The injured nymph lying lifeless on the ground becomes the centre of sorrow, while the satyr’s posture reflects genuine mourning rather than his usual wild nature. The loyal dog sitting quietly beside her further deepens the feeling of sadness and loyalty, making the scene more moving. The calm landscape contrasts with the tragedy unfolding in the foreground, reminding viewers that nature continues despite human suffering. The painting beautifully portrays love, compassion, and the universality of grief across all living beings.
