A palace scene

Support Type: Paper
Paint Type: Watercolor
Current Location: Victoria and Albert Museum in London
Location History:The original site is preserved in the Ajanta Caves themselves. The specific original copy produced by Gupta is archived and historically cited as being preserved in the Indian Museum, South Kensington (which is now known as the Victoria and Albert Museum in London)

This historic watercolour on paper painting is a meticulous, interpretative recreation of a 5th-century ancient Buddhist mural located on the left wall of Cave 1 at the Ajanta Caves. It was created as part of a landmark early 20th-century expedition (1900–1911) led by British artist and patron Lady Christiana Herringham. Sponsored by the Indian Society of Oriental Art, the project tasked avant-garde Indian artists—including Samarendranath Gupta—with documenting and preserving India's rapidly deteriorating ancient artistic heritage.
