A Mosque and a shrine, Najibabad

Artist:Sita Ram
Support Type: Canvas
Paint Type: Watercolor
Current Location: British Library

The painting presents Najibabad not simply as a collection of religious buildings, but as a quiet, lived sacred space. The open courtyard, flowering garden, canopy, and small figures create a sense of everyday life continuing around the mosque and shrine. Rather than emphasizing grandeur, Sita Ram’s restrained colours and soft light give the architecture an atmosphere of stillness and contemplation. The carefully observed arches, domes and receding walls suggest permanence, while the people appear small against the buildings, emphasizing how religious architecture dominates the visual and spiritual landscape. At the same time, the garden and trees soften the strict geometry of the structures, bringing together architecture, nature, devotion, and ordinary human presence. To me, the work feels less like a dramatic historical record and more like a memory of a place a moment of calm in which the sacred and the everyday exist naturally beside one another.
