A lion hunt

Support Type: Paper
Paint Type: Watercolor
Current Location: National Museum Of Asian Art

This painting shows the hunt as more than a simple outdoor activity. The royal hunt becomes an expression of Mughal power, courage and imperial control over nature. The rocky landscape creates a setting for the royal hunt party while the movement of horses, attendants and animals gives the scene a lively sense of action. The principal hunter, dressed in orange and mounted on horseback naturally attracts attention and appears to represent the authority and status of the emperor or a powerful noble. The accompanying riders and foot attendants emphasize his importance. Create a sense of hierarchy. At the time the peaceful village, shepherd and flowing stream in the background provide a contrast to the excitement of the royal hunt. Muhammad Sharif’s careful treatment of trees, grasses, rocks and animals shows the interest, in close observation and minute naturalistic detail. Overall the painting combines narrative, landscape and symbolism to glorify authority
