Sir Thomas Lawrence’s initial timeline began in Bristol in 1769. His father managed the Black Bear Hotel in Devizes, which functioned as a high-traffic routing hub on the London-to-Bath coaching route. Operating as a genuine child prodigy, Lawrence was already keeping his family's finances afloat by age ten. He generated consistent revenue by rendering pastel portraits of the inn's wealthy guests, successfully charging three guineas per session.
