Samarendranath Gupta (1887–1964) was an eminent artist, printmaker, and pioneer of modern Indian art pedagogy who played a crucial role in the Bengal School revivalist movement. Born in Lahore into an intellectual family, he pursued formal artistic training at Calcutta's Government School of Art as an inaugural disciple of master painter Abanindranath Tagore. Under Tagore's mentorship and the patronage of revivalist stalwarts like E.B. Havell and Sister Nivedita, Gupta mastered the indigenous watercolor wash technique while absorbing classical Mughal, Rajput, and Ajanta aesthetics. He further broadened his versatile artistic repertoire by traveling to England to gain advanced, specialized expertise in graphic arts, etching, and drypoint. His distinct thematic oeuvre drew heavily from classical Indian literature, spiritual folklore, and mythological epics, yielding celebrated signature masterpieces such as The Broken String, Kajari Dance, and Damayanti. Characterized by poetic lyricism, muted tonal washes, and delicate linear grace, his wash paintings and etchings achieved widespread critical acclaim through national and international exhibitions. Gupta's immense contributions to visual arts culminated in significant administrative and academic leadership, notably when he was appointed the first Indian Principal of the Mayo School of Arts in Lahore in 1929. During his distinguished tenure, he also served as the curator of the Lahore Central Museum, bridging regional revivalism with rigorous Western printmaking methodologies. Today, his enduring legacy as a visionary educator and master artist remains commemorated across premier museum collections and modern Indian art scholarship.
