Robert Reid

Robert Lewis Reid (1862–1929) was an American Impressionist painter, muralist, teacher and decorative artist. He was trained in Boston, New York and Paris and successfully developed from an academically oriented figure painter into one of the artists associated with American Impressionism. His work is particularly recognised for luminous paintings of women in floral and garden settings. His paintings combined Impressionist colour and light with carefully arranged decorative compositions. He was a founding member of the Ten American Painters and received important mural commissions for the World's Columbian Exposition, Library of Congress, New York Appellate Division Court House and Massachusetts State House. He also designed stained glass. In his later years he taught in Colorado Springs and continued working after paralysis affected his right hand.
