Muhammad Sharif is one of those Mughal-court figures who's easy to overlook precisely because his day job wasn't really painting — it was administration. But he came up through one of the most consequential artistic households of the period. Born as a son of Khwaja Abd al-Samad, he was a painter in the imperial atelier under Akbar and Jahangir both and he eventually rose to the rank of a very high mansabdar, holding the title Amir-ul-Umara. He was also close to Prince Salim, the future Jahangir, from a young age, and like his father, combined artistic training with real administrative weight — a combination no other painter's family in Mughal service is known to have matched.
