Lu Ji

Lu Ji lived from around 1429 to 1505 and was a famous painter during China\'s Ming dynasty. Hailing from Ningbo in the Zhejiang province, he became known everywhere for his gorgeous bird-and-flower paintings. Instead of inventing a totally new style, Lu built on the traditional ink-wash paintings from the Southern Song era. He started out by practicing the techniques of an early master named Bian Wenjin. Later on, he worked right at the imperial court with another great artist, Lin Liang, while also studying and copying classic masterpieces from the older Tang and Song dynasties. What really made Lu stand out was how he blended two different art styles. He mixed super careful, detailed brushwork (called Gongbi) with loose, free-flowing sketching. His paintings popped with bright, decorative colors while still feeling full of natural life, often featuring symbolic creatures like mandarin ducks and hawks. When he was called to serve during the Hongzhi reign, Lu built an amazing career as both a court painter and an imperial guard officer. His unique touch and beautiful artwork ended up inspiring generations of artists across China and East Asia for years to come.
