Kalipada Ghoshal (September 1906- 29 April 1995) was a Calcutta-based Bengali painter who gave himself almost seven decades of his life to the idiom of Abanindranath Tagore. Born into a humble family in the Bengal district of Howrah, he was a child prodigy with an early fascination for all things artistic, was ‘discovered’ through a family link to Nandalal Bose, and trained under the personal tuition of Abanindranath Tagore at the Indian Society of Oriental Art (1922) to absorb the wash-and-tempera method established by Japanese practice. During his lifetime, he produced courtly, mythological, and devotional works for clients as wise as a British Governor-General, Italian and Indian royal houses, and imparted his knowledge to his own students at the Society he learned at; now he is remembered as one of the penultimate direct descendants of the Bengal School deep into his seventies.
