Alexandre Georges Henri Regnault was a Parisian-born painter during the 19th century who contributed to the French Orientalism movement. He was the son of a prominent scientist and studied under leading Salon painters such as Alexandre Cabanel, Antoine Montfort, and Louis Lamothe, and attended the École des Beaux-Arts and the French Academy in Rome. Regnault’s style was transformed by his travels to Spain and North Africa, especially Tangier, Morocco, leading him to move towards a more experimental direction. His most notable work was Salome (1870), depicting the biblical temptress richly dressed in elaborate and exotic luxury. Regnault fought and lost his life in the Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871) in 1871.
