Giovanni Cimabue, also known as Cenni di Pepo, was an important Italian painter of the late 13th century and is often regarded as one of the leading figures in the transition from Byzantine artistic traditions to the more naturalistic style of the early Renaissance. Active mainly in Florence, Cimabue is known for his religious paintings, particularly large-scale images of the Virgin and Child and scenes from the life of Christ. His works retain the gold backgrounds, symbolic forms, and spiritual character of Byzantine art, but his figures show greater emotional expression, volume, and attention to human form. Cimabue’s influence can be seen in the development of Italian painting and especially in the work of his younger contemporary, Giotto. Although only a limited number of works can be securely attributed to him, Cimabue remains an important artist in the history of Western art for helping to move Italian painting towards greater realism and expressive power.
