Unknown tale of Sukhna Lake art: joggers of the sunrise, paddleboats, tourist selfies. This art movement on the lakeside blossomed in silence and became a cultural jewel. It’s not art mixed with galleries.

It’s on sidewalks, boats, benches, sketchpads, and even cafe walls within the lake.

The Sukhna Lake art is the predecessor of all creations in Chandigarh.

In planning the city, Le Corbusier envisaged Sukhna as an Indus Valley Civilisation well-planned and structured town in the 1950s. He imaginatively introduces space, since Government College of Art artists would sit at the waterfront, sketch the Shivalik hills, catch ripples, paint reflections, and capture the everyday commotion of life.

What started as basic watercolour scenes soon evolved into another style: cool colours, geometrical compositions, and a strong association with the natural realm. These lakeside sketches, over time, became a signature style known as Sukhna Lake Art.

How Sukhna Lake Flourished?

By the end of the 1970s, Sukhna Lake had already become a silent creative center.

Artists would tend to stop and have canvases drawn in the walkway by morning strollers. Art teachers held open-air sessions; students used the facility as an outdoor studio. And gradually, social meetings, cultural exhibitions, weekend drawing sessions, and artists’ clubs made Sukhna the unofficial art school of Chandigarh.

The city turned modern, and, seduced by the Sukhna Lake, art changed with it, blending realism, abstraction, a modern essence, and minimalism.

It was further enhanced on social media, where hundreds of people shared sukhna-inspired doodles, digital art, and illustrations.

This hobby became a local movement closely associated with the town.

The Lake & Reflections

The lake itself is the most recognizable theme in Sukhna Lake’s art. But not just the “blue water”.

The artists focus on the reflections of the lake, the golden sunset disappearing into the lake, and the figure of a walker into the water. Indian arts symbolic reflections have long been linked to the idea of reflection.

To most artists, the lake’s reflection was a metaphor for Chandigarh itself.

However, it was a modernity on the surface, with a profound interior. The brush strokes tend to replicate waves, low-level gradients, and light transitions.

This theme makes the picture peaceful, as one could hear the gentle splashing of the water.

The Shivalik Silhouette

The other strong and beautiful theme is the Shivalik Hills, which are visible in the background of the lake. They are shaped, clean, geometric, and softly swelling, and are best suited to the architectural character of chandigarh.

The Shivaliks have traditionally been painted on miniature paintings of the Punjab hills. Nevertheless, in the Sukhna Lake art, the hills are not ornamental- they are supportive. They are a reminder of the past, stability, and attachment to the Himalayas. The majority of artists sketch them with small, fleeting strokes.

The hills also sometimes look like dark lines on a sunrise.

As time passes, they fade away delicately into the colours of the sunrise.

In any case, this theme ensured that the painting was firmly grounded in emotion and location and was immediately identifiable to any audience in the area.

Yet another fantastic and vivacious theme? Sukhna Lake is the place where everyone can find people, and it’s so vibrant to see them living their different lives at different stages and ages such as, Early morning joggers, walkers, photographers, old couples on benches, kids with balloons; These ordinary figures are often portrayed in mere sketches by artists.

Individuals are the symbols of the community, the rhythm, and the soul of Chandigarh.

It incorporates narrating and human feeling into the art at Sukhna Lake.

Fundamentally, the art form does not focus solely on nature per se, but on the people contained within it.

Art pupils, digital artists, illustrators, and amateurs are all taking the style in their own direction.

Since the diaries in watercolours, since the sketches on iPad.

The style has changed, and the spirit has not been spoiled: Sukhna is still the muse. Sukhna paintings are now being exhibited in cafes around the lake.

The lakeside aesthetic is emphasized in exhibitions.

Most importantly, the community continues to increase, and as long as water ripples, the hills shine.

People still seek peace there at this lake, and the art form will remain alive, coloring Chandigarh, whose soul is already lively.
