Salvator Rosa's Philosophy, also known as Self Portrait as a personification of philosophy, has been a much-debated work in his artistic career. It is believed that this portrait is a reflection of an identity crisis or a self-discovery for Rosa, as researched over the years through the inscription found at the back of the painting, which is still a debut in the field of art among various scholars. Also at the same time, it was considered as a self-branding for the artist. During the 17th century, the Italian artist Rosa was considered a craftsmen than an intellectual. So, by depicting himself in an artwork, Rosa asserted that his value lies in his mind and his own concept rather than in the brushwork alone. Further, in the painting, he has rendered himself holding a tablet on which a Latin phrase is written, which stands as - be silent, unless your speech is better than silence, which reflects his Neo-stoic ethics that stands as rather he remains unheard or he produces art that does not have any moral or intellectual substance. Moreover, while his other portraits stand as contemporaries, this one reflects sombre, confrontational expression with a dark scholar's drape, in a simple robe. Hence, this work of Rosa stands as a manifesto with a connection to patrons. It is said that for his own portrait, he does not set any price or accept any commission, which anchored his reputation loudly. Philosophy, technically, has the illusion of tenebrism and realism tradition altogether, with an influence of Jusepe de Ribera. Hence, by the end of the late 17th and 18th century, various critics, artists and scholars started to use Rosa's work as a blueprint for subjects like suffering, independence, etc. Also, the background of the portrait is the ultimate classic reflection of tenebrism, with a dark, atmospheric effect, making the artist engage with the viewers intensely. The facial expressions lack vanity and feel stern and weathered, marked by detailed brows. Where the hair is natural and unkept, with dark colour. With shoulder-length curls reflecting high society patrons. Rosa crowned himself with a scholar's cap, which functions as a visual rejection of the artisan label. Therefore, Rosa's Philosophy is a masterpiece of a visual manifesto of an independent artist with moral integrity.
